The Invitational Basketball Tournament!

To play for a tournament to unwind and to stay fit is a thing that all of us in the corporate world should do. Yes, I did played for a tournament commissioned by one of the consulting firm here in Makati (Hyder Philippines) together with De La Salle University.

Our team was composed of new comers like me because our company has just started to grow in employees for its expansion so majority of the players of our company who played for our the games are new faces. We were informed that there is a try-out for the said tournament a week before the said tournament took off and I told myself why not give it a try. So the try out was held four days after the start of the tournament so we barely had the time to practice and it turns out that the try out is already our practice. But a game is not enough to know how good your teamates are and is not enough to know how the team would fare in the tournament because the players barely knows how the other players game. In short, we are just expecting luck to come our way comes the games.

As a result of this, we ended up 1 win and 5 losses. We won against Ayala Land Inc. - CMG with a slight margin in the overtime. We lost to the host Hyder Consulting Phil. by a big margin, lost to ID 103 (alumni of DLSU) by a few points as we rallied in the fourth quarter to trim the lead but was not enough though. We also lost to Struktura by a small margin. Lost to Design Coordinates Inc. (DCI), also a close fight and finally lost to CE Faculty of DLSU in close fight also.

Overall we gave a good fight to all our opponents but as I tried to analyze where we went wrong, I saw that the reason is simply lack of teamwork. I've seen that there are lots of talent in our team but those talents are simply not combined but is working indepently and you don't want that in a team beause this game is a game of teamwork. One must not rely on his own talent because 5 heads and bodies are always better than 1. Some are just show offs who just want to take the shot just for them to score. Basketball cannot be won by just mere scoring. It is a game of teamwork, defense, patience and good execution. I hope the team learned from the mistakes it did during the tournament. Well see what we can do next care. I hope we could play a better game next time.

But it was fun. It was a great way to unwind and to keep ourselves fit. I also hope that the organizers would be considerate to those teams who comes late because of the traffic and of course of the work they are doing. Organizers can you please be considerate enough? A post of his caught my attention. The post is about a site which tells you your future earnings for the next ten years. I don't know the accuracy of this site but it is really a stress reliever as John says it. I tried doing it and surpassed John Chow's future earnings by more than a hundred thousand dollars. John I just beat you! I just forgot my answer so I have nothing to share(It's my secret! Laughs!). But will this happen? That I don't know. Looking at what I have achieved now, I am nothing compared to a John Chow. But who knows, no one can say what the future will bring(I never lose hope!). I am very optimistic of the outcome of what I have started but this will only happen if I will be patient enough to learn new things on the web. The key here would be hard work and apply what I learned and will learn from the materials I've been reading. I never quit. There are lots of bloggers who quit when they feel like they have done everything. Wrong, you have not done your best that is why you haven't prospered. It takes a lot of patience to stay in the blogosphere. One thing that a blogger must remember is to love what he is doing, because if you dont love what you are doing then you get tired of what you do and then you quit. I love what I'm doing. I will continue to learn and reach my goal. Be it yours to.

Caramoan The Next Boracay!

Caramoan a municipality in Camarines Sur is the site where the 8th season of "Survivor - France" was filmed. This season is to be viewed by over 10 million French speaking people in Canada, Belgium, France, Switzerland and other french speaking countries in Europe. It is expected that tourists would go to the islands of Caramoan after the said reality game show hit the waves.

Gota Beach, the gateway to other islets and beaches at Caramoan was rented exclusively by the French Production to shoot the famed reality game show. The provincial Government of Camarines Sur has been reported to be paid by the production a total sum of 20 million pesos for the exclusive use of the said beach. It is expected that tourists would visit the beaches of Caramoan after having the season shown just like that of Palawan where the tourists visiting the place increased to 23 percent after the 7th season of Survivor - France was shoot there.

A development plan worth 200 million pesos is to done in Caramoan which includes road networks and an airport to boost the tourism of Camarines Sur. The development would be carefully planned and improved so as not to encounter sewage problems to the place. It was also reported that two hollywood films would be possibly filmed in Caramoan.

I would definitely try to be in the beaches of Caramoan because it is just a two hour ride from our place in Bicol. The pictures shown here are courtesy of Judy Anne Ortiz, a good friend of mine, who visited the place months ago when the 8th season of Survivor - France was being shoot. They were not able to go to Gota Beach because of the restriction posted by the agreement between DENR and the French production but the pictures would definitely show the beauty that is Caramoan.

New 7 Wonders Of The World!

I've been surfing the net and accidentally stumbled upon a site that was launched to create a New 7 Wonders of the World by having all the people of this world vote for their choice of that seven new wonders of the world. I've seen that site a month ago but was not able to vote as I was experiencing some technical problems with my internet connection.

Just a while ago I saw an article from Inquirer.Net that our good President was endorsing the Mayon Volcano to be part of the new seven wonders and encouraging all the Bicolanos to vote for the perfect cone that we have in Bicol.

If you would visit the site, it list the daily top 77 wonders of the world and you would learn that Mayon Volcano is not even included in the list. But you would see the Tubattaha Reef and Chocolate Hills occupying the 8th and 9th spot respectively. So I suggest that we Filipinos and Bicolanos as well vote for these two wonders as these wonders have that possibility to be included in the list.

The voting of the New 7 Wonders of the World was launched last July 7, 2007 at Lisbon, Portugal and aims to create such seven wonders by online voting of those supporters of each wonder.

This article is intended for blogger and non-bloggers especially to those who want to be in the blogging industry. I say industry for the reason that blogging has now became an income stream to those bloggers who wants to earn money online and not just a hobby or past time and sometimes a diary to remind a person of what has happened into his life. Blogging now has been used for advertising and a very powerful aspect of e-commerce.

If a person really wants to blog, I believe he can, that is my stand and therefore blogging is for all. Some people might say that blogging is for those people who can write articles which would definitely attract readers because of its good content. False! Why did I say so? Simply because you don’t need to write those articles yourself because those articles that you want to write can already be found on the net. One good example is this site, Ezinearticles.com. The other would be GoArticles.com. There are lots of sites out there where you could choose articles which sooth your sites and contains articles of almost all topics of your interests, be it in blogging, advertising, sports, business, news and a lot more. What you should do is to rewrite these articles and maybe improve its content if you have better ideas to supplement that certain article. As business boo writer Robert Kiyosaki says it in his books (Rich Dad, Poor Dad Series), “You don’t need an idea that is new, it just have to be better.” Same as with writing, you just need to improve it because the author might have missed some details. So Young, So Good!

Indeed So young, So Good. Wesley So, the youngest Filipino grandmaster in the world at the age of 14, topped the latest 10th Dubai Chess Open besting other fellow GM's Gagunashvili, Chao, and Ghaem after tie break computation in the last round of the said tournament. I have mentioned Wesley So earlier here in this blog because of his wit and mastery of the game of chess. This is really another Filipino we should be proud of. The competition was attracted 131 players including 24 GM's. So, won the first five rounds of the events after losing in the sixth round to tormentor Gagunashvili, won the seventh game and drew the last two games.

Earlier in the tournament, so also settled for the bronze (3rd place) in the filler event Blitz game. Wesley So will be heading to Indonesia with his father for a match with fellow GM Megaranto Susanto. Let us watch out for this chess genius and prodigy for more glory that he will bring to our country. Go Wesley So!

I have always told myself that I would dedicate this site to sharing informations to those who would also want to learn to blog and at the same time earn from what they write about. So I want to take this post as one which would help those people who would want to have a blog site of their own. This article is a basic to starting your blog, so let's get started with blog hosts.

If you don't have a budget to have your blog hosted on a paid web host then blogger.com is for you. All you need to have is an account to Gmail.com and you can use that account to sign in and get started with your blog to this host. I started blogging using this host because it is owned by Google, Inc. itself and it has been very easy to link your blog to Google Adsense, one of the provider of ads which is a very good way to monetize your blog. What I also liked about this blog host is its easy way of editing the layout as well as the content of your site. The setback of this host is that it has less templates to chose from but templates can be downloaded and it could be uploaded to be your template on blogger.

Worpress.com

Another good host of a blog is wordpress.com. I have been reading a lot of positive revious from this blog host. Whats good about this host is that you can easily migrate your blogger posts to this one. I have tried doing this and indeed it was very easy. There are lots of templates to choose from this host and these templates are said to be more professional looking than the templates offered in blogger.com. What I find difficult in this host is the not so user friendly customization of its layout. I prefer costumization in blogger as it is much more easier and user friendly. Another good thing about wordpress is when a user creates a comment to a certain blog, it automatically creates a backlink to the commentor's website/blogsite.

LiveJournal.com

Aside from providing a blog program for its members, LiveJournal is also a social networking site where every user is provided with a list of friends to a certain members account. That is a very good way to socialize and interact with other bloggers.

Typepad.com

I heard this is also a good host and it also a site where the blogs are optimized for search. I checked the site and they offer a 14-day trial which is also a good thing. Big news companies use this site to host their weblogs.

There are still lots of blog hosts out there but these are just a few of the known hosts which you can start to write about the events of your life, opinions, journeys and adventures as well as the news you love to talk about. You can also start forums about the topics you want to talk about using this blog hosts. Note that even these hosts can give you a free account. They also have paid accounts which gives you a more advanced features that would make your blogging experience more enjoyable. It is up to you if you want to upgrade. The good thing about blogging is the oppurtunity of earning. Maybe when that time comes, you can go for paid accounts to the hosts that I mentioned or even have a dot com of your to be provided by web hosting companies. Well tackle those ones in the proper time and forum.

I started blogging when I learned oppurtunities of making money out of writing. I first started with a third party site that gives advertisements based on what you write. I've learned that every blog needs traffic and to do that I started to network to other bloggers and realized that there are other great oppurtunities to earn with blogs and one of those is Pay Per Post.

What I like about Pay Per Post is that it is both beneficial to both the publisher/blogger and advertiser as the publisher gets paid by doing articles with regards to a certain product or topic that an advertiser wants to promote. It is also a great avenue for gaining friends online as each and everyone learns from each others posts. I have also seen bloggers who became very successful in the programs offered by Pay Per Post where some of them really make big bucks from those programs. I intend to be part of those who really make it big with Pay Per Post. I know there are lots of things which needs to be done and I am taking one step at a time to be there. With these, I will be enjoying to write about the things I love to write at the same time earning from it.

Yahoo - Microsoft? Yahoo - AOL? or Yahoo - Google?

The battle of the internet giants are getting into the peak these days. These has all started because of the unsolicited offer of Microsoft Network to acquire one of the leading search engines, Yahoo, Inc.

Yesterday it was on the news that a possible deal America Online of Time Warner Inc. is a bout to close in. This could be a big threat to the offer of Microsoft to Yahoo. Microsoft still takes its stand to its $44.6 billion dollar offer to Yahoo while the latter believes that it undervalues the worth of Yahoo shares. It has also been reported that Yahoo is about to do a test run of Google's Adsense for search but the result would not affect the Yahoo-AOL deal. After years of battling Google in online advertising, Yahoo decided to take such test if it would benefit both internet giants. The test would not exceed 3% of the Yahoo search queries. It is said to be that about 90% of online advertising is the share that Yahoo and Google would get given the possibility of a partnership between the two companies.

The battle is just starting to be interesting. What will be Microsoft's move? Will there be a merger between these internet giants? Will it be a Yahoo - Microsoft? Yahoo - Google? Or Yahoo - AOL?

I believe that a merger of this four would definitely be a powerhouse and a monopoly indeed on the web. New search engines would definitely have a hard time competing with them if such mergers would take place.

I have been watching closely the merger being talked about by two of the giant dot coms on the web, Yahoo and Microsoft. Of course every blogger knows these two search engines because these are the players next to Google and bloggers knows the importance of being ranked in this popular search engines. The fact is, these three are the most important of the search enginese we can find on the web.

Yahoo rejected the $44.6 billion dollar offer of Microsoft which is said to be equal to $29 dollars per share of stock, because the Yahoo board believes that the price is not of the best interest to Yahoo and its shareholders. Microsoft applied pressure to Yahoo by expressing that they would directly address the matter to the shareholders and not to the Yahoo board.

I think that the merger is possible if the two camps would come up with an agreement that is both beneficial to the parties involved. I may not be so good when it comes to this mergers but in my point of view, the merger would be good for both companies for they can create a much better competition to the search engine giant Google, Inc. which is way ahead of the two companies involved.

Even with the slump in the Yahoo's operations, it has always been on the move to innovate and create ways to compete with Google. One of the recent announcements made by Yahoo is the inclusion of video storage and streaming to Yahoo's Flickr to keep up with Google's YouTube. Let's just wait and see how Flickr would do against the established YouTube which has been the pillar for video streaming.

There are lots of new things coming up on the web and we just have to wait and see what is in store for all of us.

NBA Playoffs

We Filipinos are known to be fanatics of three sports, first is boxing, second billiards and third would be basketball. We have made it to the olympics in the past consistently but because of the politics in basketball and the poor funding to train our athletes we were not able to compete in the recent olympics.

One ball game that we look up to is non other than the National Basketball Association in which we were really hooked when the Chicago Bulls are playing during the nineties with their ace player Michael Jordan. I have never lost my interest in this ball game because talents keep on coming in this game and now starts to be global. We don't usually watch the eliminations but when playoffs is about to start, thats the time when we focus on the game.

In the eliminations, there are new faces that made it to the news. One of them is non other no. 2 pick of this year's draft, Kevin Durant of the Seattle Supersonics. There is no doubt that he would win the Rookie of the Year Award. They recently trounced the Denver Nuggets (Allen Iverson's and Carmelo Anthony's team) in a sensational double overtime yesterday. Durant's team didnt make it to the playoffs because of the lack of needed support. All the rookies are the ones lifting the team. This is also because of Ray Allen leaving the team and playing for the Boston Celtics with Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce. The Boston Celtics is number one in this years eliminations. If they will win all their games left then they will tie the performance of the Dallas Mavericks last year (my team) which eventually lost to the Golden State Warriors in the first round of the playoffs. A real upset.

Chris Paul of the New Orleans Hornets made it to the news in this year's elimination. This playmaker is one of the contenders in the most coveted MVP Award. He is fighting it against Kevin Garnett (Boston Celtics), Kobe Bryant (Los Angeles Lakers) and Lebron James (Cleveland Cavaliers). I believe he would be voted by the majority of the press because of his outstanding performance from start to finish of the eliminations. Well Kevin Garnett will not be my choice. You would ask why? Simply because he is supported by two great players, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen, that is why they are topping the scoreboards. But there are no Pierce and Allen in the Hornets line up, so this guy should really be credited. We should also look at the big trades that was made this year. Shaquille O'Neal and Grant Hill was traded to the Phoenix Suns. This didn't make such an impact because they lost Shawn Marion. The Dallas Mavericks acquired Jason Kidd from the New Jersey Nets. Let's see how they will work the playoffs with the addition of this veteran playmaker. They are ranked 7th in the West. They should win the remaining games for Denver Nuggets and Golden State Warriors are not far ahead to secure the playoffs spot. The biggest acquisition of the year would be with the Lakers when they acquired Pau Gasol from the Grizzlies. Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol are really a fire on the floor. Let us see how the playoffs would fare. The Celtics is on watch because of the powerhouse line up that they have. Will they win another Championship? That is a big question. We should really watch out the playoffs and see whats gonna happen. So stick on your TV's and pop some popcorn!

Did I make money out of this blog?

I read an article in one of the traffic exchange site asking this same question, the only difference is our answer. She said a "no" and mine is a "yes" and the proof just arrived this day, April 4, 2008, my Google Adsense PIN.

I don't blame the author of the blog that I was mentioning because she said that she loves writing and that is why she does it. But there was a remark from her that "it doesn't pay my light bills" (I believe she's referring to her electricity bill). Now that should be a reason to start monetizing her blog, to pay her electricity bills. Besides she have a good site and have a decent writing basing from what I've read in her article.

After more than two months of blogging, I am starting to see the results of the work I've done. I started blogging because of a random email that was sent to me from a certain member of a social network I joined, the Friendster. She was telling me about making money within the social network and showed me a link of the proof. Of course it directed me to her blog site and saw the clip I posted here, the "Mel & Joey" earn from your blog segment and realized that we could really earn from blogs. It has been very difficult experience for me because I didn't knew adsense. I just saw it on one of the sponsored links on that site and researched about it, registered using my friendster account, yes my friendster account, you can use that if you don't have a website yet (you would be needing it if you would register), it worked for me. Still the hard part of it is that no one thought me how to do it, the only one I learned with a help of an online friend(Mommy Ruby) is viral linking. I have to study everything on my own so I told myself, why not make this blog a tool to teach everybody who wants to earn online. That I am doing and will do for the rest of my blogging days.

Sometimes its hard to reply on people's queries because of the new things that I learn online. I use to focus on each thing that I learn and sometimes I can't give time to those I am teaching. It is very hard to divide time when you are just starting to learn more and more. To those I'm mentoring, be patient with me, I'll be back on you, thats for sure. I've had my triumph and failures on the web, failures that posts as challenge to me. Challenges that makes you improve your work and give more dedication, correct those mistakes and innovate. There are still much to talk about but I am cutting this off now. Watch out for the posts that I will be making, tips from Google Adsense, and other ways to earn online. Been discovering quite a few of them. Watch out for the new site that I would be making. Will correct my past mistakes on that site. My journey on the web has been a trial and error but still is rewarding.

I am happy that there are no holds on my Google Adsense account. I am adhering Google Adsense to all the Filipinos and all bloggers of the world because it is free. Everything in this life that is free is good. I believe that, do you? So let's Adsense our way to richess. I'll see you there.

The Brian Gorrell Story

Many of the Filipino bloggers decided not to talk about the story of this Australian blogger because of the legal implications that they would be facing in doing an article about his blog. I will be as careful as those who have tackled this news by not mentioning the names involved in his story because just like the other known blogger like Abe Olandres, we are just protecting the blogging profession (I consider it as one), because some pro bloggers earns their "main" income in this medium. I guess this is the main reason why Filipino bloggers they shy away from the story.

Now that it has been featured in one of the biggest TV station here in the Philippines, ABS-CBN, I think its about time to publish my opinion about all that Brian is talking about. I've been reading closely to all his entries because of the fact that he is a good writer, I said a good writer, and he can prove that if you would just read closely to his blog and another proof of that is his daily visitors which reach more than 50, 000 and is estimated to be more than 2 million in just a month of exposing the story. No blogger has ever done that in a very short span of time in the blogosphere.

Before I share my opinion, let me start off with the story of this famous blogger. Brian Gorrell is an Australian who was originally from Canada but raised in the country down under. He decided to have a vacation in our country and met his ex-boyfriend who is a writer (former) of a big newspaper and is said to be a part of the high class society or shall we say a socialite. Yes, Brian Gorrell is a gay as well as his lover. They had a whirlwind romance and Gorrell and his ex-lover talked about setting up a restaurant business to be put up in Greenbelt Makati. His ex-lover when he went back to Australia asked him to send the former the money which would be used for the said business. As he came back to the Philippines he discovered that there was no business being set up and all of it was just a make believe for him. The story was sensationalized because of the stories behind it which he told in his blog and the people involved are the what we so call the "socialites" whose names are really well known in this country. He said that this people allegedly are addicted to "coccaine" or Coke (street name). A few of the people involved in this story are also writers of the big paper which his ex-lover wrote before and allegedly do exchange positive write-ups for freebbies in Boracay and Hotels in Makati.

Gorrell started his blog to get the money which his ex-lover owed him which amounted to $70, 000 according to him. Doing my math, it is close to 3 million pesos. From what I've read in other blogs, Gorrell's site is already a case study of libel laws on the net. From what I understand on his blog, he doesn't want to pursue a case against his ex-lover here in the Philippines because of the loopholes of our justice system. I don't blame him for that. He believes that his ex-lover can get away with what he did. In my opinion, our officials should look into what he is saying and if it is true that selling of drugs is rampant in public gatherings and is patronized by this high society then is just reflects that our fight against prohibited drugs is not that good. Our officials should do something to correct this even if the people involved are those in high society. This is not a story of gossip anymore but becomes a national issue as it tackles the use of prohibited drugs. These high society people should be the role model to every one of us and not the ones who violates the law. This also affects our tourism because of the bad experiences that a tourists encountered in our country and I think we should help him out if he is really telling the truth. Who would want to go to our country if someone who loves our country had a bad experience and our government is not helping out. No one would ever come back if they will not feel secure in this country. Right? Some would say, it should be laid out in the proper forum but the proper forum is not proper for Gorrell for he cannot be represented by his Australian lawyer as far as I understand it. Therefore it is stalemate when it comes to that. So I guess the Philippine Government should intervene in this one. Settle all the issues and move forward. Lastly everybody who owes something to someone should pay.

Introducing The Google Android!

What is the Google Android?

Android is a software development platform for mobile phones based on the Linux operating system and developed by Google and the Open Handset Alliance. It does not allow third party developers to write native code, instead all user applications are executed by a specialized java interpreter.

The unveiling of the Android platform on November 5, 2007 was announced with the founding of the Open Handset Alliance, a consortium of 34 hardware, software and telecom companies devoted to advancing open standards for mobile devices. Android platform will be made available under the Apache free-software and open source license.

The alliance is composed of Google, Intel, Nvidia, Texas Instruments, eBay and others. HTC, Samsung Electronics, LG and Motorola which are also members of the alliance announced that it would use this platform in their products to be released within this year. The said platform will compete with platforms developed independently by Apple, Microsoft, Nokia, Palm, Research and Motion and Symbian.

The video attached is just a preview of what to expect of the Android platform. Sergey Brin co-owner and President of Google and Steve Horowitz explaining the capabilities of the android software. Google has invited developers to develop applications for the Android platform. Google will award 10 million dollars to developers who build great application for Android.

Whether it is quality or quantity it is still traffic and is much better than no traffic at all. I advise every new blogger like me to join this traffice exchange community. A few of the members lost thier interest to this site because they say that they don't get quality traffic to their site. The reason in my opinion is absurd because there are member who really read and subscribe to the sites of the member. But at first, I suggest that members should increase first their advertisment cost by being a power dropeer first then the reading of readworthy blogs should be next. There are sites of members that would really boost your blogsites. The secret to everything is reading religiously.

I remember joining technorati, the biggest blog directory just a month ago and I was overwhelmed by the result it gave me. From scratch, I now have an authority of 173. I believe it is an achievement for a start up blogger like me. My technorati ranking also increased from about 2 million plus during my start to 34, 802 now.

You would ask how I did such feat in just a short span of time? Well the answer to your question is non other than Link Building!

One way of building links is to join memes that links your site to other blog sites. One of the most known link building meme is the "Big Bang". I believe this one has helped me the most. The others that I joined are "Project Exlinks", and "Links Around The World". Well, I would like to give credit to super Mommy Ruby for introducing all of these to me. All that I know before are link exchanges or more coined as "exlinks". I suggest that everyone join these meme's as it would increase your technorati ranking and as well as your authority thus, making you an authority to blogging. (At least to Technorati's point of view). I still don't know how link building works to increase the google pagerank. Still not ranked at it. But I'll be there in due time. It takes a lot of patience as all Pro Bloggers say. Maybe not in this site but to the other sites I would build.

What else can we do to increase our links?

Aside from exchanging links, you can do comments to other bloggers' blog site but take note that you should not sign in your blogger account when commenting but rather use the name/url option. This would be counted as backlink to your site. The blogger account would just link it to your blogger profile but not your blogsite. Now, if the name/url is not available, you can sign in your blogger account and you can still create a backlink by doing a little html code which is very easy to do.

Type In:

One more piece of advise, make sure that your comment is relevant to the post you just commented. By this way, the author of the blog would notice you and there is a big chance that he would visit your site. And by doing this, you can increase your traffice as well. So why dont you comment on this post and I will comment as well to your article.

The Aquino family has announced that the former President was found to have colon cancer on her check up. The former President decided to submit herself on check-up when she started to suffer from high blood pressure and difficulty of breathing followed by fever and starts to lose her appetite and at the same time noticing her weight loss.

Colorectal cancer, also called colon cancer or large bowel cancer, includes cancerous growths in the colon, rectum and appendix. It is the third most common form of cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the Western world. Colorectal cancer causes 655,000 deaths worldwide per year.[1] Many colorectal cancers are thought to arise from adenomatous polyps in the colon. These mushroom-like growths are usually benign, but some may develop into cancer over time. The majority of the time, the diagnosis of localized colon cancer is through colonoscopy. Therapy is usually through surgery, which in many cases is followed by chemotherapy.

Let us all pray for the recovery of the former President whatever our political party is. Let us acknowledge her contributions to our history. She had been an inspiration to all of us for fighting the dictatorship of the Marcos regime. May she recover from her illness however hard it may be.

Do you have a carbuncle?

I wrote this article as an information to those who doesn't know the english term for "pigsa". Yes, it is carbuncle. I saw this male as I was about to go to the office this morning who have this skin disease located on his neck. Now, what if it's located somewhere else, maybe right at your butt, that it hurts you and makes you decide not to come to the office. What would you tell your boss or your immediate superior?

Boss, I cannot come to the office today because I have a "pigsa".

Quite shameful isn't it? But how about if you would say:

Boss, I cannot come to the office today because I have a carbuncle.

Sounds OK. I bet your boss would permit you right away because he doesn't even know what a carbuncle is. I just don't know if my boss is familiar with the term, our firm is owned by an American.

I learned this term in one a radio station here in Metro Manila, 90.7 Love Radio. I am not sure if the show is titled "Tambalang Balasubas at Balahura" or just the segment of it. The show is graced by fellow bicolano or shall I say bicolana Nicole-hiyala and Chris-Tsuper. The tandem is known for their wacky acts and opinions in the airwaves but sometimes gives informations such as this one. If you want to have a smile early in the morning. You should try their show.

But when they gave this information they said that "pigsa" is impetigo or carbuncle but as I researched about the two skin diseases, I found out that there is a big difference between the two. And if you read closely on both skin disease you would find out that "pigsa" is carbuncle and not impetigo although they are closely related.

Just to give you an informations about this, a carbuncle is a lump on the skin usually caused by bacterial infection. Most carbuncles are caused by the bacteria staphylococcus aureus. The infection is contagious and may spread to other areas of the body or other people.

A carbuncle is made up of several skin boils. The infected mass is filled with fluid, pus, and dead tissue. Fluid may drain out of the carbuncle, but sometimes the mass is so deep that it cannot drain on its own. Carbuncles may develop anywhere, but they are most common on the back and the nape of the neck. Men get carbuncles more often than women. Because the condition is contagious, family members may develop carbuncles at the same time. Often, the direct cause of a carbuncle cannot be determined. Things that make carbuncle infections more likely include friction from clothing or shaving, generally poor hygiene and weakening of immunity. For example, persons with diabetes and immune system diseases are more likely to develop staphylococcal infections.

Carbuncles usually must drain before they will heal. This most often occurs on its own in less than 2 weeks. Placing a warm moist cloth on the carbuncle helps it to drain, which speeds healing. The affected area should be soaked with a warm, moist cloth several times each day. The carbuncle should not be squeezed, or cut open without medical supervision, as this can spread and worsen the infection.

Treatment is needed if the carbuncle lasts longer than 2 weeks, returns frequently, is located on the spine or the middle of the face, or occurs along with a fever or other symptoms. Treatment helps reduce complications related to an infection. A doctor may prescribe antibacterial soaps and antibiotics applied to the skin or taken by mouth. Deep or large lesions may need to be drained by a health professional.

Proper hygiene is very important to prevent the spread of infection. Hands should always be washed thoroughly after touching a carbuncle. Washcloths and towels should not be shared or reused. Clothing, washcloths, towels, and sheets or other items that contact infected areas should be washed in very hot (preferably boiling) water. Bandages should be changed frequently and thrown away in a tightly-closed bag.

Carbunculus may heal on their own. Others usually respond well to treatment. However, a carbuncle can return again and again for months or years following the first infection. Call a doctor if a carbuncle does not heal with home treatment within 2 weeks or is located on the face, neck or spine. The same if you have a fever or a lot of swelling around the carbuncle, or pain that gets worse. Also consult a professional if carbuncles come back often.

Janina's Message to her critics

If I were to choose from the two, I would prefer brains. But if both are present then its a bonus. The recent Bb. Pilipinas 2008 pageant has created a buzz not only here in our country but also around the globe. This is because of the controversial winner of the Miss World Title Janina San Miguel. At presstime, the video of the question and answer portion posted on YouTube.com is at more than 1.4 million hits, and commented almost 15 thousand times. Some insulted her because she was not able to pull out a good answer plus the mistakes in her grammar and some defended her saying that she should be a given a chance to prove herself.

I tend to laugh at those who gave negative comments on the video because they themselves commit mistakes on their grammar. As much as possible, I dont want to correct grammar of others because I myself commit those mistakes. I see lots of bloggers making the same mistakes whenever I do blog hopping but I'd rather be silent for them not to get hurt. My suggestion, read your articles again and look for your mistakes. That is what I do because sometimes I tend to do articles on the spot (like this one) and is not able to check my grammar. So even if you have posted an article, you can edit your mistakes if you found one.

Now with regards to the Bb. Pilipinas pageant, I've read an article of Dolly Anne Carvajal, an entertainment writer of Inquirer.net, that the percentage for personality and intelligence acounts only for 20% of the criteria for judging and 80% for face and figure. Now doing my math, a candidate can really win even without answering a question right? A candidate can still get a 90% or less, since intelligence is only 10%. I really think that the criteria should be changed. Why not give a 2o% or 30% for intelligence?

Although English is not our first language, we've been known to be one of the best in this language, that is why foreigners outsource jobs here in the Philippines. The call centers are good example of this. They like Filipino workers because we can communicate well. In my opinion, our representative to an international pageant should be also good at this language because it reflects us. But let us give Janina the chance to prove herself. She should take the advice of former Miss World 2nd runner up Ruffa Gutierrez to study speech lessons and thereby improving her communication skills. She still has the time to prepare.

I also included here the video of her interview giving a message to her critics. I salute her for being tough amidst this controversy. Let us wait and see what's gonna happen. After all, everybody can win if the criteria is like that. I don't blame her for that. So my message to the organizers, wake up! We are being laughed at!

The primary reason I made this blog entry is to help fellow bloggers understand the world of blogging easily by knowing the basic terms used in the blogosphere. This dictionary is also intended to those people I mentor so that this site would be a source of information/reference for them. I believe that the basic foundation of a competitive blog is search engine optimization. One should increase the traffic into his web site or blog site and one has to start with the basic terms that the blogosphere uses in order for them to easily optimize their sites. You may not be able to understand all the terms that a certain forum teaches because of the lack of knowledge about a certain basic term. A question will arise after a question so it will take a lot of your time. I intentionally did not include some of the terms that I got from my source because some of them are not basic but advanced. So I intend to share them in another article maybe. I may not have included all the basic terms so I intend to update this dictionary of blogging terms from now and them. I hope that this would be informative for everyone.

1. Backlinks - (or back-links (UK)) are incoming links to a website or web page. The number of backlinks is an indication of the popularity or importance of that website or page. In basic link terminology, a backlink is any link received by a web node (web page, directory, website, or top level domain) from another web node (Björneborn and Ingwersen, 2004). Backlinks are also known as incoming links, inbound links, inlinks, and inward links.

2. Blogosphere - is a collective term encompassing all blogs and their interconnections. It is the perception that blogs exist together as a connected community (or as a collection of connected communities) or as a social network.

3. Blog Hopping -to follow links from one blog entry to another, with related side-trips to various articles, sites, discussion forums, and more

4. Blogroll -A list of blogs. A blogger features a list of their favorite blogs in the sidebar of their blog.

5. Blog site -the web location (URL) of a blog, which may be either a dedicated domain, a sub-domain, or embedded within a web site.

6. Blogger - Person who runs a blog. Also blogger.com, a popular blog hosting web site. Rarely: weblogger

7. Directories - A web directory or link directory is a directory on the World Wide Web. It specializes in linking to other web sites/blog sites and categorizing those links. A web directory is not a search engine, and does not display lists of web pages based on keywords, instead it lists web sites by category and subcategory. The categorization is usually based on the whole web site, rather than one page or a set of keywords, and sites are often limited to inclusion in only one or two categories. Web directories often allow site owners to directly submit their site for inclusion, and have editors review submissions for fitness. It is an advantage for a blog site to be listed in directories for it to be known by other users of the web.

8. Feeds - the XML-based file in which the blog hosting software places a machine-readable version of the blog so that it may be "syndicated" for further distribution on the web. Formats such as RSS and Atom are used to structure the XML file. (e.g. RSS, Atom)

9. Forum - an Internet forum is a web application for holding discussions and posting user generated content. Internet forums are also commonly referred to as Web forums, message boards, discussion boards, (electronic) discussion groups, discussion forums, bulletin boards, fora (the Latin plural) or simply forums. The terms "forum" and "board" may refer to the entire community or to a specific sub-forum dealing with a distinct topic. Messages within these sub-forums are then displayed either in chronological order or as threaded discussions. Forums can be used as a place to make backlinks to your site.

10. Google AdSense - commonly just AdSense, is an ad serving program run by Google. Website owners can enroll in this program to enable text, image and, more recently, video advertisements on their sites. These ads are administered by Google and generate revenue on either a per-click or per-thousand-impressions basis. Google is also currently beta-testing a cost-per-action based service.

11. Hits - Number of users visited is often referred as hits. (website / blog hits)

12. Monetizing Blogs - is the process by which a certain blog site is made for it to make money out of the ads posted by third party providers or by offering services in a certain blog site.

13. PageRank - is a link analysis algorithm that assigns a numerical weighting to each element of a hyperlinked set of documents, such as the World Wide Web, with the purpose of "measuring" its relative importance within the set. The algorithm may be applied to any collection of entities with reciprocal quotations and references. The numerical weight that it assigns to any given element E is also called the PageRank of E and denoted by PR(E).

14. Podcasting - Contraction of “iPod” and “broadcasting” (but not for iPods only). Posting audio and video material on a blog and its RSS feed, for digital players

15. Search engine optimization (SEO) - is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via "natural" ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results for targeted keywords. Usually, the earlier a site is presented in the search results or the higher it "ranks", the more searchers will visit that site. SEO can also target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, and industry-specific vertical search engines.

16. Subscribe - the term used when a blogs feed is added to a feed reader like Bloglines or Google. Some blogging platforms have internal subscriptions, this allows readers to receive notification when there are new posts in a blog.

15. Template - used on the "back end" of a blog that work together to handle information and present it on a blog.

17. Vlog -a video blog; a vlogger is a video blogger (e.g. someone who records himself interviewing people of a certain field).

18. Web Widget - a portable chunk of code that can be installed and executed within any separate HTML-based web page by an end user without requiring additional compilation. They are derived from the idea of code reuse. Other terms used to describe web widgets including: gadget, badge, module, capsule, snippet, mini and flake. Web widgets often but not always use DHTML, JavaScript, or Adobe Flash.

January 16, 2008, a day after my birthday (yes it is, im now accepting gifts!) is the slated date of the rematch between Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao and the reigning World Boxing Council super featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez.

Back in 2004, Pacquiao floored Marquez early in the first round of their first match. Marquez visited the canvass three times that time. One of the judges (Bert Clements) scored the round as 10-7 in favor of Pacquiao that led the match to a draw. The score should have been 10-6 like what the other judges scored (3 points for 3 knockdowns and 1 for advantage in the round). Marquez was lucky to escape the game with a draw because of the bad scoring. Will he be lucky this time? Mark my word, I don't think so. I am confident that Manny will win this fight.

When it comes to politics, I didn't like the idea of Manny running for a seat in the government. Pacquiao's reply to those who are questioning him for running is, its in his heart to help his poor countrymen. My reply to him, he can do that even when he is not seated. Many rumors spread that he ran because he pushed by some politicians that wants to ride on to his popularity. In short, benefit from him. I don't know about that but I didn't even see him seated as congressman. Besides he faced the well known lawyer and incumbent congresswoman Darlene Antonino-Custodio who already had a big machinery that abled to trump his popularity. But when it comes to the boxing sport, every Filipino is a fan of Pacquiao. A hero he is to the country, bringing pride and unity to every citizen of this country. No wonder there is zero crime rate in the Philippines everytime he steps in the ring.

I have watched almost all of Manny's fight. He has blossomed into a completer fighter. I was critizing him before for his weak defense and a not so good footwork but he has always been a bomb on the ring. Too hard to exchange combinations with him, the technique employed by Barrera was a bit effective but fall short when it comes to scoring. Seeing Pacquiao's fights recently, he has improved both on his defense, footwork and speed. There is no way that this Marquez is going to stop him having seen Marquez's fight with other pugilist.

Fellow Filipinos let us unite again to see this unforgettable match. Go Philippines! Go Manny Pacquiao!

Escudero, Diaz , DiCaprio and Graf amongst WEF’s Top Young Global Leaders

Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero and model actor turned social entrepreneur Illac Diaz are the Filipinos amongst the honorees of this years World Economic Forum’s Top Young Global leaders. They join actor Leonardo DiCaprio and tennis player Stefi Graf in this year’s award. Also included in the yearly award is CNN Anchor Anderson Cooper.

I got this scoop from one my favorite online newspaper the inquirer.net and learned that the article was because of the press release of the office of the good Senator but I opted to research more about the award giving body and I went to its website and saw the list of the 245 awardees and learned that another Filipino was included and it is non-other than entrepreneur Illac Diaz.

I really think that the writer should have researched more because I think Illac Diaz is as much as a celebrity like the good Senator and should not rely only to a press release. Illac is the founder of CentroMigrante who won the 2006 $100K MIT entrepreneurship tilt. The group’s idea is to provide clean and affordable housing to migrants who flock to other countries to seek employment but are usually unable to afford decent lodging while searching or waiting for jobs. Truly a need here in the Philippines for we have more than a million Filipinos in a year going out of this country to work abroad. He should be given credit like the neophyte Senator.

Well of course our Senator Francis Escudero should be lauded for his contributions in public service. His new authored bill, the Anti-Prostitution Bill is being deliberated now in the Senate of which he is optimistic that the bill would be passed. This bill gives greater protection to the children and women where they are not treated as criminals in this bill but victims. For more info about this bill you can visit Chiz’s website. I just have a question in mind, will Escudero be the first Bicolano President? Let’s wait and see.

The two Filipinos now joins the prestigious list of Top Young Global leaders along with Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the founders of Google.com.

I saw a movie five years ago in HBO about a true to life story of a very known man internationally having charmed and lured women to engage with him sexually by drugging them using this date rape drug. Let this story and research be a warning to women who goes out to party especially those who are offered to have a drink, whatsoever drink it is. Let me first give some facts about GHB.

GHB: Gamma hydroxy butyrate or Gamma hydroxybutyric acid, Sodium Oxybate

Made From: gamma butyrolactone (GBL) and Sodium Hydroxide or Potassium Hydroxide - basically it is degreasing solvent or floor stripper mixed with drain cleaner. When GBL or BD or products containing them are ingested, GHB is produced in the body, that is why we refer extensively to GBL and BD products on these pages.

Street Names for GHB: GHB, "G" (most common), Gamma-OH, Liquid E, Fantasy, Georgia Home Boy, Grievous Bodily Harm, Liquid X, Liquid Ecstasy (is not ecstasy), Scoop, Water, Everclear, Great Hormones at Bedtime, GBH, Soap, Easy Lay, Salty Water, G-Riffick, Cherry Meth, and Organic Quaalude, Jib

Description: A clear liquid. Looks just like water. Can be mistaken for water because it is usually found in a small (30ml) clear plastic bottle, a water bottle, or even Gatorade bottles, which contains several doses. One quick taste, and you'll know it's not water. Not as common, but also found as a white powder. Infact powder use is on the rise!

Effects: Intoxication, increased energy, happiness, talking, desire to socialize, feeling affectionate and playful, mild disinhibition, sensuality, enhanced sexual experience, muscle relaxation, loss of coordination due to loss of muscle tone, possible nausea, difficulty concentrating, loss of gag reflex.

This drug was popularized because of the true accounts of the rape case thrown to Max Factor heir Andrew Luster. Of course every woman knows what Max Factor is. For those who doesn't know, it is a well known line of cosmetic products. It is said that Luster used this as an additive to the drinks given to his victims. He was accused by three women of raping them and videotaping the acts of those rapes. Andrew Luster was arrested in his house and the police searched the premisses and found the alleged video tapes of Luster preying his victims. The case went dramatic when Luster fled after two weeks of trial to avoid conviction in the case filed against him. He was caught by a bounty hunter named Duane "Doug" Chapman who had been on his trail for months. He was found guilty of the 86 of 87 cases filed against him and was sentenced for 124 years of imprisonment.

I hope this story of mine gives warning to those women who loves to go out and drink. Be careful of what you drink or what is given to you. The drug is very easy to produce for the components can be bought easily. It is very deceptive for it is like water. The drug if overdosed can bring someone into coma.

Do you like to have a beautiful house like image above? Well, of course you want to. Everybody has a dream house. I myself dream of a having a house of my own with my family or maybe my soon to be family. Everybody wants to build their houses that I believe. No wonder the market share of residential properties are estimated to be the biggest share in the market. Even here in the Philippines, the real estate industry is a good market because OFW's tend to invest on these kind of properties.

You may now have some ideas on how you would want your house to look like or maybe you have already planned which areas would be occupied by each family member or maybe you already have the idea on how the furnitures would be placed. Whom should you consult?

Many of us doesn't know how to start or whom to consult when it comes to the this matter. People are confused if they would get an Architect or an Engineer. I would just like to share to everyone who wants to build a house what the Architect and the Engineer can do as this is not quite clear to every layman.

Now for residential houses, I still believe that the Architect is the first to be consulted. He can do the planning of the house and of course if you want to improve the aesthetics of your houses, these are the poeple who do good in this part although some civil engineers have also managed to do some architectural drawings but still architects are the ones who have authority in this.

If you want to build a safe house that would not collapse in case of natural disasters, the engineer should be the one to consult. What kind of an engineer should be consulted? The answer is a structural engineer. Structural engineers makes sure that the reinforcement of your houses withstands the forces of nature. They do the necessary computations to arrive at those reinforcements that I'm mentioning. Architects sometimes do structural stuffs but they are not well versed in it although they have subjects on it but they are not an authority to the structures stability.

In the construction of your dream house, an architect or a civil engineer can accomplish the job. Both can handle the project. You may want to consult a Master Plumber for the piping and sanitation (A master plumber is enough for residential dwellings but in big construction a sanitary engineer is needed), an Interior Designer to set up all about interiors, an Electrical Engineer for the lighting and power, they do the electrical plans. The service of a Mechanical Engineer should be consulted if your house would have heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC).

I hope I've shared a bit of information for my blogger friends who would want to have their dream houses built. The Taxi Business in Metro Manila

"Nine Stars" & "Sturdy"

Last night Niben (my DOTA buddy and housemate)and I went out with a friend and her friend (Chelsea and Deborah) to have them roam places here in Manila for they are just having a visit here. So went to Eastwood City in Libis to show them around and there were live bands there. We saw Barbi Almalbis and Maegan Aguilar perform there.

As we went home we've decided to go with them in Deborah's place and we rode a taxi named MGE. This is one of the most dominant taxis here in Manila and its color is white and green. I would suggest tourist to opt for this taxi for they have a communication radio which gives help be it in traffic and safety. These taxis are known for their correct and precise taxi meters.

As we were arriving in in Deborah's place she slipped to utter a bicolano word (our dialect) telling the driver to stop. The driver responded in the same dialect and there we knew that the driver also came from the Bicol Region (Region V in the Philippines).

After dropping to Deborah's place, we heeded to our place in Mandaluyong and decided to have a chat with the driver of the taxi who is a fellow Bicolano. I told him that most of the taxi drivers that we've riden are fellow Bicolano's also. He said he knows that, they say that operators and passengers prefer Bicolano drivers for they are careful on the wheels and on the road. I said that MGE is a good taxi. I asked him the operator of the taxi and said to us that it is owned and operated by Teofilo Enriquez from Macabebe, Pampanga. Then we went on talking about taxi operations and stuff.

Mario Leosala who hails from Sorsogon shared to me that taxis here in Manila are operated by one family, the Enriquez. It all started with their father who had a bus operations named "La Mallorca" but went bankrupt and corverted into a taxi business named as "R&E". It was passed on to Teofilo's brother and after that the other siblings followed to build "MGE", "Sturdy", "Nine Stars", "EFE" and "EMP". We also learned that "EMP" is owned by Teofilo's son. Drivers in these companies have all the benefits (SSS, Pag-ibig, Philhealth, etc.). He also shared that MGE have some 700 taxis operated and only 500 plus runs on the road in a day because of coding. Coding day for the taxi is also the day off of the drivers. This day alos serve as the maintenance for the taxi if needed. Assuming that 500 runs in a day with a boundary of P1860 pesos, that is equal to 930, 000 pesos a day. They could even buy two cars in a day. What a business! That is MGE alone, sister companies not included. I also learned from the driver that the MGE taxis use LPG as gas. You'll notice that LPG taxis are cheaper when it comes to gas and cheaper also for taxi fares.

I suggest that tourists should prefer these taxis for drivers there are very well versed when it comes to route and traffic for their companies conduct seminars for their drivers and the screening for their drivers are very tough. You can be assured that these drivers are not reckless. I hoped I've shared a bit of information for tourists.

The Story Behind the Nickname Pamps

Many of my friends ask me why I was nicknamed Pamps. If you don't know my real name, well, its Florante. Pamps is very far from Florante right? There were many speculations on the stories behind the origin of such nick. Some said that a diaper was found in my my bag which has brand name "Pampers" but this is not true. Now let me just tell you the story.

It started out when I was in high school. I was informed by my classmates that there is an ongoing try-out for the "Milo Best Center - Tournament". This is a baskeball tournament commissioned by Milo and one of its venues is in Legazpi City. The schools were invited to join the tournament but only 4 schools dared to join. Our school was one of them. The others were Aquinas University High School, Divine Word College of Legazpi High School and United Institute.

Knowing that our school is to compete in this ball game, I dared to try out. I remember when I was in elementary I tried out for this tournament but was not chosen. I only placed 16th in that try out but they only get 15 players, hence, I did not qualify. In the BUCELHS try out, I met the brother of my classmate Albert Orozco, his name is Serafin Orozco III (their father Serafin Orozco Jr. became our Professor in the College of Engineering in the same school and Albert also became a classmate of mine.) Now as we were warming up, Serafin noticed that I pump first before I grab the rebound so he said, "Hey! You are pumping! Pumpers!

There it all started. I was nicknamed Pumpers but some friends shortened it to Pamps and I preferred it over the original and they preferred it too as it was shorter. I was admitted to be one of the players to compose team Bicol University College of Education Laboratory High School. I became popular to the field of sports in our school but not in the field of basketball but because of chess. I even became one of the "Athlete of the Year" awardee when I was in fourth year. The legacy lives on until college for Albert and my classmates in high school became my classmates in college and I use it until now. That is the true story.

Just a bit of trivia. We played in the tournament but never won a game. We lost all our three games. But do you know the most improved basketball player of that tournament? It is non other than my team mate Jason Misolas, then became a Palarong Pambansa Player, played for the San Juan De Letran College and was a scholar, played in the PBL for various teams and now playing for the Coca Cola Tigers as a professional basketball player. Ask him my name and he will never forget the story.

My Typing Speed

Speed test

If there is one thing I think I am good at, I believe it is typing. I saw some of the typing speed of many bloggers and most of them are good in this area. The highest of which that I saw is at 68 words per minute. I haven't beaten this one yet on the site where you would be directed if you would click on the image but I have typed at a maximum of 74 words per minute. I'm at 64 presently, I'll repost again when I beat the 68 mark. I would like to give credit to my fellow bloggers for sharing the site with me. Money from Blogging!

One of the best way to earn money online is through blogging. People would ask how would you earn in blogging? There are many ways to earn with your blogs. I have known this for quite some time now but never really get through with the details before. The first thing I learned is affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing is a web-based marketing practice in which a business rewards one or more affiliates for each visitor or costumer brought about by the affiliate’s marketing effort. How do this work? It would be very hard to explain the technical aspects of this kind of marketing but to give you an overview, what affiliates do here is they apply for third party websites which offers affiliate marketing and what affiliates do is post the code of ads to the affiliate’s website or blog site. But this did not work for me that easily because to be paid in this program the visitor should have clicked and/purchased the item being advertised. But this kind of program worked for many professional bloggers.

Luckily, I’ve been a recipient of a random email which says that I can earn through blogging. How will I earn that is my question. She showed me a link of her site and I clicked there and saw an article about making money on blogging then she gave a little explanation on how you would do it but I believe it was not enough. So I searched for ways on doing it and found “Google Adsense”. This service of google provides you with all that you would need to advertise and is very user friendly. You would really see how much you earn every day. This is almost the same as affiliate marketing but here you are not just paid because of those who buys the product but you would also be paid because of the impressions made by your visitors to your blog site or website. That makes it very easy. A Tiring Yet Fulfilled Day

Saturday, I woke up late at around 10 pm because of a good Friday night I had with some of my officemates and friends. We ate and had a videoke session at Music 21 that night. That day, Judy and I had an arrangement that I would accompany her to get the souvenir items that she would bring come her flight to Legazpi to attend the 1st birthday party of her boyfriend’s niece. Her boyfriend is a very good friend of mine, his name is Joey. I was also informed by Judy that we would go to Divisoria to buy some stuffs for the birthday party that she is to organize partly. Part of our itinerary was SM Manila because I was told by my officemate that the charger for the very rare PDA phone I won a week ago in the bingo social that the ALT Cladding staged in connection with the Chinese New Year, is available. The phone is a Palm Treo model 750. Lucky me!

I didn’t know that Jack is to join us in our journey. I learned that he was coming because he was answering the text messages I sent to Judy. So then we met at Robinson’s Galleria, where I was quite lost. Still not familiar with the place because it is the most unorganized mall here in Manila. Do you agree with me?

Our first stop was Caritas Manila in Pandacan where “Binhi ng Pag-asa” is located, a shop of souvenir items made by orphans. The idea was to buy the souvenirs for the birthday party at the same time helping the makers of the souvenir items. In this place you could buy beautiful decorated candles. I don’t know if those candles are scented but I guess so. Next stop is SM Manila,the reason for this stop is to buy the charger but without success. We only learned in this mall that the Palm Treo charger is available at CD-R king but is out of stock. Imagine we kept on searching on different cell phone shops but we were not expecting to find it at that shop. The sad part is, as I’ve said, its out of stock.

After an unsuccessful search at SM Manila, our next stop was Tutuban Center where Judy bought party stuffs. I will not enumerate what are those. We were still expecting to find a charger in that place but still with no success. Next we went to 168 Shopping Mall to buy chocolates and candies still for the party. After buying those that I mentioned, we still searched for the charger but just like before, we still didn’t find one. When we were already tired walking, we decided to eat at the food court of 168 and Judy suggested “Chopsticks and Spoons” because she said the servings are big. I opted for the “chicken lomi” which I thought is just good for one but as Jack was ordering, the attendant ask him how many of us would eat and he said we were three and the attendant responded that it is already good for three persons. But it was not, it was actually good for six. We had 2 servings each. Our side this was a very different squid ball. It was really a squid ball because of the presence of the squid. Majority of which are squid not flour. We really had the treat of our lives. We were very full. The taste was very satisfying. I told Judy that I will keep coming there for that food and I will. What was my name? I think I forgot. Would you believe, the “Lomi” was just at P90 pesos. Very cheap yet very delicious and the ingredients are more than complete if there is such a thing. So don’t forget it’s “Chopsticks and Spoons” Divisoria people. Go there and eat, and you’ll really have a treat of your lives.

After that we were about to go home already but I remember another mall which have plenty of computer and electronic goods. So I told Judy that I remember some stalls which sells phones and chargers there. So there we went in that mall hoping for our last shot of that damned charger. My attention was caught by a bag which I thought would be a very good bag for my laptop. So I bought it. Judy also bought some stuffs there. Jack also bought some stuff there. The foreigner owner who is I guess, a Taiwanese, gave us some lucky charm which is for love and money. She also told us that we could find chargers next to the building were in and that building is the Center Mall. There are lots of stalls there and after looking and asking some of them we finally found a stall and the attendant was the one who looked for the charger to the other stalls and at last the charger was found. There our search has ended.
We arrived at Judy’s place at about 9 pm had a rest for a while then went home and arrived at 10 pm. My housemates asked us if we want to go with them to party in Malate. The mind is willing but the body is weak so we therefore opted to stay at the apartment and after a while slept.

So this ended our adventure. It was tiring but we did found what we were looking for. If you want to buy stuffs in Divisoria, though the goods are already cheap there, you can still make it cheaper by bringing Judy with you. Its not her charm. Ask her why.

Books, My Mentor!

The very main purpose of my blog is to share what I’m interested in, what is happening in my life, what I intend to do in life. Today I am about to share the books I read. There is no denying that one of the sources of my knowledge is of course books. There are only a few in engineering who are interested in reading books which are not related to their field. I am one of them. I also know a few of them like Engr. Francisco Bilog, Engr. Sonny Andalis who just arrived from Singapore for a 5 day vacation (thanks for the dinner! Hehe!). Let me share the books which mentored me and I hope that you would also learn from these books that I will share, most especially to those that shares the same interest as mine be it in attitude, religion, beliefs, entertainment and sports.

Let me start off with The Holy Bible

This may not be the exact book that I’ve read. You may read whatever bible you would want to read as long as you would learn and be a better person from it. The interest came from my family of course, a very religious family. I am not saying that I am a very religious person, it just so happen that I belong to one but I am not as religious as them. But I do read the Bible. You would ask why? Basically two reasons, one is of course spirituality the other is because of the interesting stories you would find in this book and those stories are part of history. The stories I love most in the Bible is the story of Joseph “The Dreamer”. I also love the story of Saul then became Paul, from persecutor of Christ but then became a loyal servant after miracles happened to his life and after which spread Christianity mostly to the pagan nations. He is the reason why most of us are Christians today. There are stories like “David and Goliath”, stories of “Solomon”, “Samson and Delilah”, etc. which would give us inspiration and learn lessons from it. A must read book, besides this is the most read book of all time. It’s about time you read this one.

Inspirational and Self-Help Books

I would like to give credit to Catherine Ocampo Mayor for sharing with me her book 25 ways to win with people and letting me know the books of John Maxwell. I really learn a lot from those books. Makes me see where my mistakes are and I believe it somehow equipped me to be a better person. And if you are a leader or would want to be a leader, John Maxwell’s “The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership” is for you to read. And if you are looking for inspirational stories about love, friendship, marriage, attitude, courage, etc., Jack Canfield and Mark Viktor Hanssen’s “Chicken Soup for the Soul is a must read for you. “The Purpose Driven Life” is also a very good inspirational book at the same time giving spirituality to the reader. If you want to succeed in life as well as in business and your goals, Og Mandino’s “The Greatest Salesman in the World” is a good one to read. The lesson in persistence is the best part that I loved in this book. It says there,

“I will persist until I succeed!

I am not delivered unto this world into defeat nor does failure course my veins. I am not a sheep waiting to be prodded by his shepherd. I am a lion and I refuse to talk, walk and sleep with the sheep. The slaughterhouse of failure is not my destiny.

I will persist until I succeed!”

Big thanks to my very good friend Judy Anne Ortiz for sharing me Og Mandino’s Books. Another book that this friend shared to me is the book “Tuesdays With Morrie”
which is a book written by Mitch Albom where the subject is non-other than his college mentor Morris “Morrie” Schwartz. This is a story of courage and death. A true account of the life of this college professor where meeting sessions with his former student, the author, took place every Tuesday. A very dramatic story which made me cry at end.

Another short story book I’ve read is a short novel by Antoine de St-Exupery, “The Little Prince”
where the main character travels from different planets and learn lessons of life. One popular quote from this book is about perception towards people. It says there

“But the eyes are blind…it is only with the heart that one can see rightly, what is essential is invisible to the eye.”

I’ve known this book since high school but never read this one because I was not into reading in my high school years.

One of the most amusing adventure novel series is non-other than the Harry Potter Series.
J.K Rowling really made this a phenomenal hit. If you don't have anything to read, then go for this one. The adventures in the book are complete and the author really described each scene vividly that you would not stop reading each and every book 'till the very end.

When it comes to love stories I would suggest Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s “Love in the Times of Cholera”.
This is a love that sprang amidst the epidemic cholera. It tells us of the story of Florentino Ariza falling in love with the lovely Fermina Daza. Fermina during the courtship when they were young fell in love because of the mystery of his suitor but later realized that what she felt was just infatuation. The woman married another man but the man waited until the death of the husband and were then reunited. Thanks to a Kring Yoshida for sharing this to me.

The very first book that I started to read is a book which I borrowed from my sister. I have nothing to do so I decided to take a peek of it but then I started to enjoy reading it. This is the book “The Client”
which was written by Lawyer John Grisham. The book is about the a boy who is the key to solve a mystery killing. The book is a legal fiction, suspense and drama. All books of John Grisham are equally interesting. You can also try “The Pelican Brief”, “A Time to Kill”, “The Firm” and others.

If you want to give a financial up start for your kids as well as for your own then Robert Kiyosaki's "Rich Kid, Smart Kid" is the book for you.
In this book the seven types of intelligence was discussed and an example of the person with such completete intelligences is non-other than Tiger Woods. This book gives awareness to business and finance for your kid but in a manner that the reader could easily understand.

Let me include some of the books which I was reading when I was in high school. I am a chess fanatic and can play chess competitively. How did I do that? By reading chess books of course. Here are some good chess books that I had.

There are still plenty of chess books which I haven't included here. But I do think that these three books are good materials to start playing competitive chess.

No matter what books you read or prefer, the most important thing about reading it is to be entertained and to learn from it. You may opt to carry the principles that each and every book is teaching and you may not. It is your choice. But I know for a fact that it thought me a lot in life, belief as well as in principle. I hope you would be able to read some of the books that I suggest. Have fun reading!

Career, Civil Engineering!

Today I would like to talk about what do in life, how we earn for a living, many would call it as a job but some would call it a career. The difference between a job and career in my point of view is that a job is what you are doing in the present while the latter is what you are doing now and what you intend to do in the future or maybe for the rest of your life. Let me start with civil engineering.

As you can see in my profile, I am a civil engineer. For the sake of those readers who have less knowledge about what civil engineers do, I would give you some of the fields where we can work or we can fit into.

I always argue with friends that are not in the same engineering field as mine (mechanical, electrical, chemical, etc.) that civil engineering is the broadest of all the engineering disciplines. Because of that I would tell them that it is the most difficult of all because of its scope. Besides, if you would pursue the master’s study in C.E., this field is the one that have the most number of specialization. Fellow civil engineers are you with me? Let me just give you some of the fields where we could be of use. (This is as far as I know because there are still areas which civil engineers could work that I dont know.)

Education

A civil engineer who is very adept with the theories and laws behind civil engineering can be a good candidate in this field. Not only the laws and theories but also the latest technologies and/or softwares used in engineering. Nowadays, it is already a must that an engineer knows how to create or read drawings using the AutoCAD software. Thanks to Autodesk, drawings have become much easier and finer than the convetional way of doing it. I started with this field because my family and relatives are educators and I have also been into this field. Let us face it, we could not be here if not of these educators who unselfishly thought us to become what we are now.

Structural Engineering

Who knows Michael Scofield? Prison Break? Well to those who dont know him, Michael Scofield is a character played by Wentworth Miller in the suspense series Prison Break. He is a civil engineer and is specializing in structural engineering. The is the most complex and the most difficult because here, you would most probably use almost all the theories behind civil engineering. You would basically do all the math and design in this field. The very main purpose of structural engineering is the stability of every structure, how to make it strong that it would not collapse upon application of loads. No, no, no, I will not discuss any further. Some readers might not want to read all the technical aspects of it.

Geotechnical Engineering

Somewhat related to structural engineering for this talks about the properties of the soil that would be needed in foundation design of the structure. A soil test is usually what the engineers in this field do. They test the soil for its properties and makes appropriate recommendations on what would be the best type of foundation to be used for a certain construction. Still, I would not discuss the types of foundations because of its technicalities.

Water Resources

I think the most qualified person to discuss matters regarding water are not chemical engineers or chemists but civil engineers in the field of water resources. For those of you who dont know, fluid mechanics and hydraulics which are major sbujects is one part of our board exam. Civil engineers study properties of water both in statics and dynamics. Piping, dams, channels what we do in this field.

Transportation and Traffic Engineering

I don’t have much exposure in these fields but from the word itself I would say that it would tackle on horizontal structures which would be used in transportation. Both of these are also subjects in civil engineering and can be a specialization in civil engineering.

Project/Construction Management

This phase comes when actual construction of a project is on going or about to start. Although engineers here say that project and construction management is different from each other, it does resemble one objective, to make the project coordinated and finished on time. Project management is more of coordinating indifferences between the client/owner, consultants, contractors, etc. while construction management manages problems on site and coordinates works on site to arrive at the most efficient output and do the job right at the scheduled time.

Earthquake Engineering

This engineering specialization is still somewhat related to structural engineering. Earthquate engineers study the relative effects of earthquake movements to the structure. They define the earthquake loadings to a certain structure that is needed in the structural analysis of that structure.

Wind Engineering

Still related to structural engineering. Engineers responsibility in this field is to give the most possible wind loads that a structure would resist. They do wind tunnel test to come up with these loads. Wind tunnel testing is not only used in structures but also in doing race cars. They do wind tunnel testing to automobiles for it to resist the wind effects as it moves.

Design and Detailing

Most of the companies in engineering are making big bucks in this field of engineering. Although you can be a detailer even if you are not an engineer, I think the most capable person of doing such are engineers for they possess all the needed knowledge in detailing. There are different detailing which can be done in civil engineering. We have steel detailing, rebar detailing, facade detailing to mention a few of these detailing.

Sanitary Engineering

Although this field is already separate from civil engineering, the core subjects here are those from civil engineering. Here in the Philippines, if a civil engineering graduate would take up this course, he would just have to take a few subjects most of which are only specialized subjects in sanitary engineering. You may be able to finish the course in one and half year and to some schools, maybe a year would do. Sanitary Engineers have a different licensure though.

Geodetic Engineering

Before Civil Engineering students who finished their surveying subjects in their third year can take the junior geoditic engineer licensure examination already but this was abolished already a few years back because of the petition of senior geodetic engineers in Congress to abolish the junior geoditic licensure examination. You can also take up this course for the same duration as that of sanitary engineering.

Because of the complexities of the specializations that civil engineering have. It becomes very difficult for civil engineers to specialize in their field. Maybe I am speaking through my experiences. So fellow civil engineers, which would you want to specialize on? At this point in time, I want to specialize still in structural engineering. It is where I would be satisfied as a civil engineer. I may not be involved in such field fully but that time will come. I do hope.

What I can advise to my fellow civil engineers and professionals on other fields is just do their job however small that be because all objectives can be reached by your institution if each and every one of you would do his job. Be a role player. Just do it says NIKE. After all you are just employees of your respective companies, do what they ask you to do. If it is not agreeable to you then find another job or create a job that suits your need and makes you happy and fulfilled. Have your own business if you can. That I intend to do in the near future.

Gokongwei's Speech

Before I begin, I want to say please bear with me, an 81-year-old man
who just flew in from San Francisco 36 hours ago and is still suffering
from jet lag. However, I hope I will be able to say what you want to
hear.

Ladies and gentlemen, good evening. Thank you very much for having me
here tonight to open the Ad Congress. I know how important this event is
for our marketing and advertising colleagues. My people get very
excited and go into a panic, every other year, at this time.

I would like to talk about my life, entrepreneurship, and
globalization. I would like to talk about how we can become a great nation.

You may wonder how one is connected to the other, but I promise that,
as there is truth in advertising, the connection will come.

Let me begin with a story I have told many times. My own.

I was born to a rich Chinese-Filipino family. I spent my childhood in
Cebu where my father owned a chain of movie houses, including the first
air-conditioned one outside Manila . I was the eldest of six children
and lived in a big house in Cebu's Forbes Park .

A chauffeur drove me to school everyday as I went to San Carlos
University , then and still one of the country's top schools. I topped my
classes and had many friends. I would bring them to watch movies for free
at my father's movie houses.

When I was 13, my father died suddenly of complications due to typhoid.
Everything I enjoyed vanished instantly. My father's empire was built
on credit. When he died, we lost everything-our big house, our cars,
our business-to the banks.

I felt angry at the world for taking away my father, and for taking
away all that I enjoyed before. When the free movies disappeared, I also
lost half my friends. On the day I had to walk two miles to school for
the very first time, I cried to my mother, a widow at 32. But she said:
"You should feel lucky. Some people have no shoes to walk to school.
What can you do? Your father died with 10 centavos in his pocket."

So, what can I do? I worked.

My mother sent my siblings to China where living standards were lower.
She and I stayed in Cebu to work, and we sent them money regularly. My
mother sold her jewelry. When that ran out, we sold roasted peanuts in
the backyard of our much-smaller home. When that wasn't enough, I
opened a small stall in a palengke.

I chose one among several palengkes a few miles outside the city
because there were fewer goods available for the people there. I woke up at
five o'clock every morning for the long bicycle ride to the palengke
with my basket of goods.

There, I set up a table about three feet by two feet in size. I laid
out my goods-soap, candles, and thread-and kept selling until everything
was bought. Why these goods? Because these were hard times and this was
a poor village, so people wanted and needed the basics-soap to keep
them clean, candles to light the night, and thread to sew their clothes.

I was surrounded by other vendors, all of them much older. Many of them
could be my grandparents. And they knew the ways of the palengke far
more than a boy of 15, especially one who had never worked before.

But being young had its advantages. I did not tire as easily, and I
moved more quickly. I was also more aggressive. After each day, I would
make about 20 pesos in profit! There was enough to feed my siblings and
still enough to pour back into the business. The pesos I made in the
palengke were the pesos that went into building the business I have
today.

After this experience, I told myself, "If I can compete with people so
much older than me, if I can support my whole family at 15, I can do
anything! "

Looking back, I wonder, what would have happened if my father had not
left my family with nothing? Would I have become the man I am? Who
knows?

The important thing to know is that life will always deal us a few bad
cards. But we have to play those cards the best we can. And WE can play
to win!

This was one lesson I picked up when I was a teenager. It has been my
guiding principle ever since. And I have had 66 years to practice
self-determination. When I wanted something, the best person to depend on was
myself.

And so I continued to work. In 1943, I expanded and began trading goods
between Cebu and Manila . From Cebu , I would transport tires on a
small boat called a batel. After traveling for five days to Lucena, I
would load them into a truck for the six- hour trip to Manila . I would end
up sitting on top of my goods so they would not be stolen! In Manila ,
I would then purchase other goods from the earnings I made from the
tires, to sell in Cebu .

Then, when WWII ended, I saw the opportunity for trading goods in
post-war Philippines . I was 20 years old. With my brother Henry, I put up
Amasia Trading which imported onions, flour, used clothing, old
newspapers and magazines, and fruits from the United States . In 1948, my
mother and I got my siblings back from China . I also converted a two-story
building in Cebu to serve as our home, office, and warehouse all at the
same time. The whole family began helping out with the business.

In 1957, at age 31, I spotted an opportunity in corn-starch
manufacturing. But I was going to compete with Ludo and Luym, the richest group in
Cebu and the biggest cornstarch manufacturers. I borrowed money to
finance the project. The first bank I approached made me wait for two
hours, only to refuse my loan. The second one, China Bank, approved a
P500 ,000-peso clean loan for me. Years later, the banker who extended
that loan, Dr. Albino Sycip said that he saw something special in me.
Today, I still wonder what that was, but I still thank Dr. Sycip to this
day.

Upon launching our first product, Panda corn starch, a price war
ensued. After the smoke cleared, Universal Corn Products was still left
standing. It is the foundation upon which JG Summit Holdings now stands.

Interestingly, the price war also forced the closure of a third
cornstarch company, and one of their chemists was Lucio Tan, who always kids
me that I caused him to lose his job. I always reply that if it were not
for me, he will not be one of the richest men in the Philippines
today.

When my business grew, and it was time for me to bring in more
people-my family, the professionals, the consultants, more employees-I knew
that I had to be there to teach them what I knew. When dad died at age 34,
he did not leave a succession plan. From that, I learned that one must
teach people to take over a business at any time. The values of hard
work that I learned from my father, I taught to my children. They
started doing jobs here and there even when they were still in high school.
Six years ago, I announced my retirement and handed the reins to my
youngest brother James and only son Lance. But my children tease me because
I still go to the office every day and make myself useful. I just
hired my first Executive Assistant and moved into a bigger and nicer
office.

Building a business to the size of JG Summit was not easy. Many
challenges were thrown my way. I could have walked away from them, keeping the
business small, but safe. Instead, I chose to fight. But this did not
mean I won each time.

By 1976, at age 50, we had built significant businesses in food
products anchored by a branded coffee called Blend 45, and agro-industrial
products under the Robina Farms brand. That year, I faced one of my
biggest challenges, and lost. And my loss was highly publicized, too. But I
still believe that this was one of my defining moments.>

In that decade, not many business opportunities were available due to
the political and economic environment. Many Filipinos were already
sending their money out of the country. As a Filipino, I felt that our
money must be invested here. I decided to purchase shares in San Miguel,
then one of the Philippines ' biggest corporations. By 1976, I had
acquired enough shares to sit on its board.

The media called me an upstart. "Who is Gokongwei and why is he doing
all those terrible things to San Miguel?" ran one headline of the day.
In another article, I was described as a pygmy going up against the
powers-that- be. The San Miguel board of directors itself even aid for an
ad in all the country's top newspapers telling the public why I should
not be on the board.

On the day of reckoning, shareholders quickly filled up the auditorium
to witness the battle. My brother James and I had prepared for many
hours for this debate. We were nervous and excited at the same time.

In the end, I did not get the board seat because of the Supreme Court
Ruling. But I was able to prove to others-and to myself-that I was
willing to put up a fight. I succeeded because I overcame my fear, and
tried. I believe this battle helped define who I am today. In a twist to
this story, I was invited to sit on the board of Anscor and San Miguel
Hong Kong 5 years later. Lose some, win some.

Since then, I've become known as a serious player in the business
world, but the challenges haven't stopped coming.

Let me tell you about the three most recent challenges. In all three,
conventional wisdom bet against us. See, we set up businesses against
market Goliaths in very high-capital industries: airline, telecoms, and
beverage.

Challenge No. 1 : In 1996, we decided to start an airline. At the time,
the dominant airline in the country was PAL, and if you wanted to
travel cheaply, you did not fly. You went by sea or by land.

However, my son Lance and I had a vision for Cebu Pacific: We wanted
every Filipino to fly.

Inspired by the low-cost carrier models in the United States , we
believed that an airline based on the no-frills concept would work here. No
hot meals. No newspaper. Mono-class seating. Operating with a single
aircraft type. Faster turn around time. It all worked, thus enabling
Cebu Pacific to pass on savings to the consumer.

How did we do this? By sticking to our philosophy of "low cost, great
value ."

And we stick to that philosophy to this day. Cebu Pacific offers
incentives. Customers can avail themselves of a tiered pricing scheme, with
promotional seats for as low a P1. The earlier you book, the cheaper
your ticket.

Cebu Pacific also made it convenient for passengers by making online
booking available. This year, 1.25 million flights will be booked through
our website. This reduced our distribution costs dramatically.

Low cost. Great value.

When we started 11 years ago, Cebu Pacific flew only 360,000
passengers, with 24 daily flights to 3 destinations. This year, we expect to fly
more than five million passengers, with over 120 daily flights to 20
local destinations and 12 Asian cities. Today, we are the largest in
terms of domestic flights, routes and destinations.

We also have the youngest fleet in the region after acquiring new
Airbus 319s and 320s. In January, new ATR planes will arrive. These are
smaller planes that can land on smaller air strips like those in Palawan
and Caticlan. Now you don't have to take a two-hour ride by mini-bus to
get to the beach.

Largely because of Cebu Pacific, the average Filipino can now afford to
fly. In 2005, 1 out of 12 Filipinos flew within a year. In 2012, by
continuing to offer low fares, we hope to reduce that ratio to 1 out of
6. We want to see more and more Filipinos see their country and the
world!>

Challenge No. 2: In 2003, we established Digitel Mobile Philippines,
Inc. and developed a brand for the mobile phone business called Sun
Cellular. Prior to the launch of the brand, we were actually involved in a
transaction to purchase PLDT shares of the majority shareholder.

The question in everyone's mind was how we could measure up to the two
telecom giants. They were entrenched and we were late by eight years!
PLDT held the landline monopoly for quite a while, and was first in the
mobile phone industry. Globe was a younger company, but it launched
digital mobile technology here.

But being a late player had its advantages. We could now build our
platform from a broader perspective. We worked with more advanced
technologies and intelligent systems not available ten years ago. We chose our
suppliers based on the most cost-efficient hardware and software. Being
a Johnny-come- lately allowed us to create and launch more innovative
products, more quickly.

All these provided us with the opportunity to give the consumers a
choice that would rock their world. The concept was simple. We would offer
Filipinos to call and text as much as they want for a fixed monthly
fee. For P250 a month, they could get in touch with anyone within the Sun
network at any time. This means great savings of as much as 2/3 of
their regular phone bill! Suddenly, we gained traction. Within one year of
its introduction, Sun hit one million customers.

Once again, the paradigm shifts - this time in the telecom industry.
Sun's 24/7 Call and Text unlimited changed the landscape of mobile-phone
usage.

Today, we have over 4 million subscribers and 2000 cell sites around
the archipelago. In a country where 97% of the market is pre-paid, we
believe we have hit on the right strategy.

Sun Cellular is a Johnny-come- lately, but it's doing all right. It is
a third player, but a significant one, in an industry where Cassandras
believed a third player would perish. And as we have done in the realm
of air travel, so have we done in the telecom world: We have changed
the marketplace.

In the end, it is all about making life better for the consumer by
giving them choices.

Challenge No. 3: In 2004, we launched C2, the green tea drink that
would change the face of the local beverage industry -- then, a playground
of cola companies. Iced tea was just a sugary brown drink served
bottomless in restaurants. For many years, hardly was there any significant
product innovation in the beverage business.

Admittedly, we had little experience in this area. Universal Robina
Corporation is the leader in snack foods but our only background in
beverage was instant coffee. Moreover, we would be entering the playground of
huge multinationals. We decided to play anyway.

It all began when I was in China in 2003 and noticed the immense
popularity of bottled iced tea. I thought that this product would have huge
potential here. We knew that the Philippines was not a traditional
tea-drinking country since more familiar to consumers were colas in
returnable glass bottles. But precisely, this made the market ready for a
different kind of beverage. One that refreshes yet gives the health
benefits of green tea. We positioned it as a "spa" in a bottle. A drink that
cools and cleans> ...> thus, C2 was born.

C2 immediately caught on with consumers. When we launched C2 in 2004,
we sold 100,000 bottles in the first month. Three years later, Filipinos
drink around 30 million bottles of C2 per month. Indeed, C2 is in a
good place.

With Cebu Pacific, Sun Cellular, and C2, the JG Summit team took
control of its destiny. And we did so in industries where old giants had set
the rules of the game. It's not that we did not fear the giants. We
knew we could have been crushed at the word go. So we just made sure we
came prepared with great products and great strategies. We ended up
changing the rules of the game instead.>

There goes the principle of self-determination, again. I tell you, it
works for individuals as it does for companies. And as I firmly believe,
it works for nations.

I have always wondered, like many of us, why we Filipinos have not
lived up to our potential. We have proven we can. Manny Pacquiao and Efren
Bata Reyes in sports. Lea Salonga and the UP Madrigal Singers in
performing arts. Monique Lhuillier and Rafe Totenco in fashion. And these are
just the names made famous by the media. There are many more who may
not be celebrities but who have gained respect on the world stage.

But to be a truly great nation, we must also excel as entrepreneurs
before the world. We must create Filipino brands for the global market
place.

If we want to be philosophical, we can say that, with a world-class
brand, we create pride for our nation. If we want to be practical, we can
say that, with brands that succeed in the world, we create more jobs
for our people, right here.

Then, we are able to take part in what's really important-giving our
people a big opportunity to raise their standards of living, giving them
a real chance to improve their lives.

We can do it. Our neighbors have done it. So can we.

In the last 54 years, Korea worked hard to rebuild itself after a world
war and a civil war destroyed it. From an agricultural economy in
1945, it shifted to light industry, consumer products, and heavy industry
in the '80s. At the turn of the 21 st century, the Korean government
focused on making Korea the world's leading IT nation. It did this by
grabbing market share in key sectors like semiconductors, robotics, and
biotechnology.

Today, one remarkable Korean brand has made it to the list of Top 100
Global Brands: Samsung. Less then a decade ago, Samsung meant nothing to
consumers. By focusing on quality, design, and innovation, Samsung
improved its products and its image. Today, it has surpassed the Japanese
brand Sony. Now another Korean brand, LG Collins, is following in the
footsteps of Samsung. It has also broken into the Top 100 Global Brands
list.

What about China ? Who would have thought that only 30 years after
opening itself up to a market economy, China would become the world's
fourth largest economy? Goods made in China are still thought of as cheap.
Yet many brands around the world outsource their manufacturing to this
country. China 's own brands-like Lenovo, Haier, Chery QQ, and
Huawei-are fast gaining ground as well. I have no doubt they will be the next
big electronics, technology and car brands in the world.

Lee Kwan Yu's book "From Third World to First" captures Singapore 's
aspiration to join the First World . According to the book, Singapore was
a trading post that the British developed as a nodal point in its
maritime empire. The racial riots there made its officials determined to
build a "multiracial society that would give equality to all citizens,
regardless of race, language or religion."

When Singapore was asked to leave the Malaysian Federation of States in
1965, Lee Kwan Yew developed strategies that he executed with
single-mindedness despite their being unpopular. He and his cabinet started to
build a nation by establishing the basics: building infrastructure,
establishing an army, weeding out corruption, providing mass housing,
building a financial center. Forty short years after, Singapore has been
transformed into the richest South East Asian country today, with a per
capita income of US$32,000.

These days, Singapore is transforming itself once more. This time it
wants to be the creative hub in Asia , maybe even the world. More and
more, it is attracting the best minds from all over the world in
filmmaking, biotechnology, media, and finance. Meantime, Singaporeans have also
created world-class brands: Banyan Tree in the hospitality industry,
Singapore Airlines in the Airline industry and Singapore Telecoms in the
telco industry.>

I often wonder: Why can't the Philippines , or a Filipino, do this?

Fifty years after independence, we have yet to create a truly global
brand. We cannot say the Philippines is too small because it has 86
million people. Switzerland , with 9 million people, created Nestle. Sweden
, also with 9 million people, created Ericsson. Finland , even smaller
with five million people, created Nokia . All three are major global
brands, among others.

Yes, our country is well-known for its labor, as we continue to export
people around the world. And after India , we are grabbing a bigger
chunk of the pie in the call-center and business-process- outsourcing
industries. But by and large, the Philippines has no big industrial base,
and Filipinos do not create world-class products.

We should not be afraid to try-even if we are laughed at. Japan ,
laughed at for its cars, produced Toyota . Korea , for its electronics,
produced Samsung.

But already, hats off to Filipino entrepreneurs making strides to
globalize their brands.

Goldilocks has had much success in the Unites States and Canada , where
half of its customers are non-Filipinos. Coffee-chain Figaro may be a
small player in the coffee world today, but it is making the leap to
the big time. Two Filipinas, Bea Valdez and Tina Ocampo, are now selling
their Philippine-made jewelry and bags all over the world. Their
labels are now at Barney's and Bergdorf's in the U.S. and in many other
high-end shops in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East .

When we started our own foray outside the Philippines 30 years ago, it
wasn't a walk in the park. We set up a small factory in Hong Kong to
manufacture Jack and Jill potato chips there. Today, we are all over Asia
. We have the number-one-potato- chips brand in Malaysia and
Singapore . We are the leading biscuit manufacturer in Thailand , and a
significant player in the candy market in Indonesia . Our Aces cereal brand is
a market leader in many parts of China . C2 is now doing very well in
Vietnam , selling over 3 million bottles a month there, after only 6
months in the market. Soon, we will launch C2 in other South East Asian
markets.

I am 81 today. But I do not forget the little boy that I was in the
palengke in Cebu . I still believe in family. I still want to make good. I
still don't mind going up against those older and better than me. I
still believe hard work will not fail me. And I still believe in people
willing to think the same way.

Through the years, the market place has expanded: between cities,
between countries, between continents. I want to urge you all here to think
bigger. Why serve 86 million when you can sell to four billion Asians?
And that's just to start you off. Because there is still the world
beyond Asia . When you go back to your offices, think of ways to sell and
market your products and services to the world. Create world-class
brands.

You can if you really tried. I did. As a boy, I sold peanuts from my
backyard. Today, I sell snacks to the world.

I want to see other Filipinos do the same.

Philippine Politics! Where are we heading?

(Let me clarify first that I am not a pro-administration nor a pro-opposition but rather a pro-Filipino.)

Philippine Politics is at war. It has always been like this. We may have ended the regime of a the late dictator, former President Ferdinand E. Marcos but we’ve chosen a neophyte leader Former President Corazon Aquino that was bombarded with couple of coup’s. I really think that it all started out because of the instability of leadership in this country. The former lady President’s inexperience in Philippine politics in my opinion was the reason why we haven’t progress at all. It is not enough to be a wife of a politician to run a country. But in fairness to the former President, she was never corrupt.

Her ascendant former President Fidel V. Ramos wh0 became her Chief of Staff at the time of her regime, was a much better President in the early years of his seat in Malacañang. During his time the Philippines was known to be one of the Tiger’s of Asia because of its economic stability but was not able to sustain it until the end of his term because if I remember it right, that was the time when the peso starts to lose its value. There were also allegations of corruption during his time but was not proven until now. There were also problems like the Cha-Cha that the people and the church opposed and the not so good reception of the E-VAT. I am in favor of E-VAT. I would not discuss further why but anyone who would want to hear my side would be entertained.

Next in line is Former President Joseph Estrada. Convicted of plunder, I think he is the most vulgarly corrupt President I have known. I used vulgarly because Marcos’ corruption was not proven until his lost in the Presidency. He was not wary of his actions that is why he was easily put to jail because of many evidence and witnesses which are against him.

And now our President, Her Excellency Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, an Economist, Educator, experienced in politics. Her ascend to Malacañang was bombarded with questions of poll cheating. I am referring to the “Hello Garci!” scandal. There were lots of accusations being thrown to her government but the principal person being accused is her husband not her.

Now the latest of those controversies is the ZTE national broadband network deal which is allegedly a deal sponsored by Former Comelec Chair Benjamin Abalos and the First Gentleman himself, Mike Arroyo. With the involvement of the speaker’s son Joey de Venecia (Jose de Venecia III) as a losing party bidding for the project, the issue has escalated more because of his revelations. And because of that the position of his father was jeopardized and now unseated by the move of the Arroyo solon’s (Mikey, Dado, Iggy) in the Congress. This is a political dynasty at move. I like the Arroyo government in its economic reforms. But firstly, I hate the political dynasty that the Arroyo’s had put up as well as the Estrada’s as well as the Cayetano’s, etc., etc. These families do not respect the constitution does not respect the constitution. If you are familiar with Article II, Declaration of Principles and State Policies, Section 26, prohibits political dynasty. I think the silence of the speaker about the deal and not stopping his son to testify regarding the deal was the reason why the Arroyo solon’s made the move to unseat him as speaker. Three Arroyo’s are enough to stir up the Congress. I remember the speaker speaking in the media that the President will still support him despite of all that is happening. He was wrong, the President maintained her status quo about the issue or did she? That we don’t know. Let us wait for what is going to be said.

Jose De Venecia’s speakership ended yesterday. Accusations were said both by the Arroyo’s and by the former speaker. The Arroyo’s was questioning the book of the pork barrel which they say the former speaker was hiding. Likewise, the former speaker says that the Arroyo’s are the missionaries for the palace in order to get the pork barrels of each congressman. He also said that there were attempts to tamper the results of the election. And he is now waging war against the Arroyo government and will join the opposition. He would make revelations of the corruptions of the Arroyo government. Is he telling the truth or the Arroyo’s were correct that he just want to hold onto his position and treat the Congress as his Kingdom?

The truth doesn’t really matter to me. Politics is a plague in this country. What we should do Filipinos is to strive and work hard to make our lives much better and by that we are helping our country. We are the cure to this plague. Let us not rely on this people but ourselves, we can do it if we would just persevere. Let us not join their battle but join the battle to poverty. If Japan, Korea and China can do it, so can we. Let us have faith and confidence in ourselves. I always believe that the Filipinos are the most intelligent people in the world because of our gift to communication. We can communicate to the world. Let us use that strength. We can do it.

Ranked No. 6 as the most subscribed artists/video blogger and ranked no. 4 most subscribed director in You Tube, would you believe, is a Filipina-American Christine a.k.a “Happy Slip” Gambito. Wow, every Filipino should be proud of her because one of the most subscribed internet celebrity is from our race.

Because of her popularity in the internet world the Philippine Government through the Department of Tourism with the effort of Sec. Ace Durano, made her our newest ambassador to market the Philippine tourism in North America using the world wide web. She is recently here in the Philippines to tour the tourist spots here in the Philippines which I believe would be the subjects of her video blogs in the future.
She also visited some of the tv shows like "Wowowee" and was featured on the news.

Christine joined You Tube a year ago and was known for her wacky home videos portraying mostly her family members and relatives. She does the acting, directing, video editing all by herself. I really think one of the reasons why Christine earned this kind of popularity over the net because of her simple beauty and the fact that she is very talkative but in a very amusing way. One factor also is her talent in playing the guitar and the piano as well as being the composer of the songs she performs. Some of the songs are mimicry or mockery of other known songs. She can also make a beat out of a plastic drinking glass. This pretty lady finished a nursing degree to a school which I still don’t know and she was raised in Virginia. Her main purpose joining you tube was to have a venue where she could express herself as well as her thoughts. She wishes that every viewer wear a happy smile every time they watch her home made videos. But knowing that she is now in the revenue sharing program of You Tube, I really believe that she now earns big bucks out of her videos. Video Blogging? I’ll try to do that maybe later on if I’ll find the guts to do it.

You can actually earn while doing this kind of blogs be it in writing or video. But I would not elaborate more because I’m still gathering information to make a blog out of it and maybe we could discuss it further after such blog.

That's where she got the nickname "Happy Slip"

Be a Blood Donor, Save Lives!

Yesterday, January 27, 2008, a Sunday, was a day to conquer fears. Let me just share one of my fears, BLOOD. This fear started out when I was about to enter elementary when I had to have my hair cut before going to school. I was waiting for the barber and there was this star apple tree at the back of the chair where I was waiting with a branch within my reach. So I jumped and hanged at that branch and swing once, twice, thrice and so on. I didn’t notice that the branch was starting to break because it was small that it cannot bear my weight anymore. And the next scene was the branch breaking and I falling to a stone below, with my head going first. My cousin Jojo who is three years older than me, came rushing to carry me. As he was carrying me, I saw his hands full of blood and I just cannot bear to see the blood coming out from my head. I had a stitch in my head after that and I was not able to attend school for a week. And from then on, I started to fear blood.

But yesterday was a different day. I have to start fighting what I fear. The move started because of the need of a close friend who would have a heart operation maybe sometime next week. He told us that he would be needing blood donors for his open heart surgery. At first I hesitated because of the fear of blood plus the fact that it would be my first time to donate. But then I told myself, hey, this is a matter of life and death, I should be brave enough to face my fear, besides, this person really needs to live longer because he is a very intelligent man and he would still be touching and helping many lives.

So there we go to the Philippine Heart Center at the blood bank area. Our friends wanted to donate blood also but most of them, especially the girls, were denied because most of them are underweight. Some were denied because of high blood pressure. To be accepted as a donor, one should have a weight/mass of 50 kilograms and up. Only five of us passed the screening. I was told by the attending medical technologist that they really need my blood now because there is a patient who is bleeding that needs white blood cells/platelets whose has blood type is the same as mine. My blood type by the way is AB, a very rare blood type. So those of you who would be needing this type of blood, I am still not available for three months. My blood by the way would be replaced by the blood type that would be needed for my friends operation. The attendant also told me that the process of getting what they needed would be different and longer and would take about 2 hours. My blood and urine was tested after that.

In about 5 o’clock in the afternoon the blood bank called my name and my friends. We are told that the process would already start. Mine was special. There was this apparatus (which I would still research because I don’t know what its called) which was connected to the hose where the blood flows and it extracts the white blood cells from the red blood cells. There was a gripping cloth attached to my arm and as it grips, the blood flows and when it releases, the red blood cells goes back to my system. It made ten cycles to finish. Thanks for the television, I was not bored because of the PBA semifinal game played by Sta. Lucia Realty and Alaska Aces. I also had fun there because Jack (he was a donor also and is afraid of the needle, you can really see the fear in his face) was with me and we started chatting with the attendants not to get bored.

I just wish that the platelets that I gave save the life of that bleeding patient. I also wish that the coming operation of our friend Francis (Tadz as we call him) would have a successful one. So friends let us pray for him. Be strong “pare”, I know you can do it!

Mee, I’m sorry we were not able to come to your talent show because the process ended at about 7:30 pm and we traveled and arrived at 8:30 pm, I ate and was very dizzy. So I slept already. Hope we could watch the coronation night.

I remember when I was in 2nd year college, my aunt bought a cellular phone which was not yet capable of doing text messages. That was the time when cell phone was just starting to grow. To date, Philippines became the cell phone capital of the world. How did this happen? That is what I want to discuss here in this forum.

I never expected this industry to grow as fast as it did. Almost every household here in the Philippines already has a cell phone, not one but each family member have one, and to some two, others three or more. I have two. You would ask why three? The reason would be, each has a cell phone for the two network giants Globe and Smart and one for the call and text friendly Sun Cellular. These three network companies are earning big bucks out of this craze that the Filipino’s have.

One of the reasons why cell phones clicked here is because of it’s being handy. I believe that that is the main reason why people prefer cell phones than local landlines. The cell phone industry here outperformed the landlines. Another reason would be the text message. It was only recently that landlines can make text messages. The land lines are also innovating now because they already want it to function like cell phones but at the same time as landlines. If all the functionalities of cell phone with be incorporate on such land lines then I think it would be preferred by Filipino’s because it would be most practical for them to do so. Some prefer texting than calling because it is cheaper of course and some would write it than saying it. But I prefer the call because you can easily convey what you really want to say. Cell phone’s became very important to us because of it is our means of communication to our friends, family and business matters. I felt the importance of it when I was looking for a job. It really is a must that you have one. Other reasons why Filipino’s have cell phones is because of the applications added to it depending on its model. Some would use it as a toy because there are games in it. Some would use it as a radio and an mp3 player. I do this one. Some use it as a camera. Some use it as storage for different files. Some use it as a modem to connect to the internet and you can also directly surf the net using it. And recently it can now be a television.

I think that this industry would still grow because cell phone companies are always innovating there functionalities and capabilities to grow with time and technology. I believe this the reason why it has now become a necessity rather than luxury.

Body Painting

Last night my officemate and friend Jack went out to a place called Metro Bar from an invitation of a special friend Imee (she’s special cause she is a special child…kidding! I told you I’m going to get back to you!) who told us that one of their friend who is also a contestant to a search they joined is going to perform with her band on that bar.

So off we went after work, (I was lucky I was not asked to work late! Good for me!) and there we meet Imee and another candidate in the search for Ms. Mandaluyong 2008 (that is the search they joined) named Rose. She represents Bagong Silang if I’m not mistaken. She is tall at 5’8” plus four inches of her high heels. I was awed by how tall she was. There we also met Ara, the one who was about to perform later that night. She is also beautiful as well as the ladies I’ve mentioned. Oh I forgot to tell, the tickets were free care of Ara I think. Sorry for those that we invited and did not come, the tickets are for free!

As the show was starting we realized that there was a fashion show first before Ara’s band is to perform. The fashion show was entitled as “INKDulge” because they are featuring body painting in that fashion show. The show was organized by JMA-UPM (Junior Marketing Association of the University of the Philippines Manila), the lone marketing association in UP Manila as they say it. The show was sponsored by Levi’s. There they featured amateur and professional models. It started with a ramp of models wearing Levi’s jeans and shirts and after that the models took the stage with the body paints on them. It was good to know that we have very good artists doing body painting. The theme was something like skulls and some of Egyptian carvings. There was this woman who had body paint which looks like she you were watching her x-ray film. In that show I realized that the human body is a much better canvass than the natural canvass that painters use because it moves and the model is giving life to the painting. But I observed that the painter used only two colors, black and gray. Maybe because of the theme or maybe it was for cost cutting measures. I know those kind of paints are expensive. The reason, I really don’t know. I took some pictures of them on the ramp but I think I would just post it here later on. I still don’t have enough time to upload it.

After the modeling, Ara’s band started to play with some of their originally composed songs. She was the vocalist and at the same time playing the electric guitar in rhythm. I told the two girls they would really have a hard time beating her in the talent competition. But they said it was okay coz that was just a part of the competition. I like their camaraderie and it just shows that competitions can really be healthy and the good thing about it is that you gain friends. After the band, the party already started and the music was supplied by DJ Coki. At 12 midnight we went home.

Sports! Movies! Games! Music! Websites! Technology! – My List, Tell Me Yours…

I am thinking of topics which I could post in this blog and suddenly the idea of putting up a list of my favorites would be a good one to let every reader of my blog know me more. Here are the list and a little explanation of why I liked them.

-Sports-

Dallas Mavericks – My favorite team in the NBA, why because of the 2006-2007 MVP Dirk Nowitzki. I think he is a complete player. He can shoot from the outside and drive on the inside and also good in rebounds. Boston Celtics is a good team this year but Dallas would beat them (I hope…).

-Movies-

Adam Sandler Movies – That would be the “The Wedding Singer” and “50 First Dates”, I think Adam Sandler is very good at feel good movies. He would really make you laugh with very less effort of doing so. I think it comes out naturally to him.

Jim Carey Movies - I like his performance in “The Mask” and “Liar Liar” but his best for me is his drama in the “The Truman Show” where he earned his best actor award. Imagine it even made me cry (I got carried away!). Hey, watch out! Maybe your life is just like Truman, everything was a set-up.

Tom Hanks Movies – He really is the number one actor on my list. He was very good in “Forrest Gump”, “The Terminal” and “Philadelphia” but what I like best is his movies “Saving Private Ryan”. The best war movie I’ve ever seen.

Russell Crowe Movies – He was very good in his performances in “The Gladiator”, “The Cinderalla Man” and my favorite “A Beautiful Mind”.

-Games-

I am referring here to Video Games, my favorite now is DOTA (Defense of the Ancients-Warcraft III) and my favorite hero there is non-other than Zeus the Lord of Olympia. Dota addicts you got a comrade here, so let’s get it on! It’s hammer time! By the way I also play Counter-Strike and NBA Live.

-Music-

Oh I love music! I listen to a variety of genres. Now I’ll go for the alternative band “My Chemical Romance”, their music is good. I also like “Fra Lippo Lippi”. Here in the local music (Philippines) I’ll go for “Side A”, “Freestyle” and “True Faith”. I also listen to reggae band “Brownman Revival”.

-Websites-

I usally visit “Yahoo.com”, “NBA.com”, “Ebay.Com”, “Cnet.com” and of course “Google” and this site. Local sites would be “MannyPacquiao.ph” (I always see to it that I have a news about our best boxer), “Inquirer.net”.

-Technology-

I am not really a technology whiz person, I just go with the flow. I have friend who keeps me updated. I use to play with my laptop. And play music on my phone.

Top Filipino Athletes!

One of the reasons why I started to do blogs at this site is to update all sports fanatics like me about what is happening in the sports world most especially to update Filipino sports fans of how are the Filipino athletes are doing internationally in their respective fields. Maybe you would ask why I am very interested in sports. The reason behind it is that I myself was an athlete way back in my high school and college years. I have played almost all the games (but not all) that you know. I am at best in the field of chess. I was a varsity chess player for my high school (Bicol University College of Education Laboratory High School) and also in college (Bicol University College of Engineering). I used to represent Legazpi City in the regional sports fest of Region V (Bicol Region). If I were to rank the games which I played before, the ranking would be: 1. Chess, 2. Soccer, 3. Basketball, 4. Track and Field, 5. Lawn Tennis. These were the games I played in competition. I also play badminton but I haven’t competed in any competition with such sport.
As I was saying earlier this blog would be a news blog about our Filipino Athletes who are doing well in their sports. Let this be a venue for those people who want to hear sports news as well. So let me start by what I have read recently.
1.In chess, let is congratulate Wesley So for being the youngest Grand Master in Chess to date at the age of 14 yrs old. He got his third and final GM Norm in the 2nd Prospero Pichay Chess Cup held last October here in the Philippines. This is really a fete for Philippine chess. In the first leg of ASEAN Masters Chess Circuit held in Tarakan, Indonesia, we produced our ninth Filipino Chess Grand Master in the name of Jayson Gonzales. Also in that event, topping Group B is Grand Master Mark Paragua with 9.0 points, he never lost in the tournament. Finishing second to him is non-other than GM-elect Jayson Gonzales. Also did well in category B is IM-elect Rolando Nolte. In category A, the top Filipino finisher was GM Wesley So.
2. Let us congratulate our women golfers, Jennifer Rosales and Dorothy Delasin in winning the 2008 Women’s Golf World Cup. This is the first time that team Philippines won the world cup. Finishing 2nd to them is South Korea.
3. In boxing, we have Nonito Donaire, our IBF/IBO world champion who made an upset in the fifth round by a KO of Darchinyan which became the bout of the year. There is also my “tokayo” Florante Condes, our IBF minimumweight king. And of course our Manny Pacquiao who is now training in United States for his slated bout on my March 15 (that is my birthday I expect to receive presents) with the superflyweight champion Marquez. The Filipinos are looking forward to this match.

Love is My LIfe...(A Repost)

Friday, March 16, 2007, I felt that there is a need to write about what is coming into my mind, how I feel about everything that is happening to my life. Yesterday, it was my birthday, although I was sick, I made sure that that day would be celebrated and would be a gathering of my closest friends. With the help of Jason and Coza, we prepared a small dinner and a drinking session after. There I realized the real essence of being friends, not only because it was my birthday but making you feel that you are important and knowing that these friends would not leave you in the midst of despair and loneliness. I've been to a heartache for the past few weeks and my friends never left me in those days, they never stopped to boost my confidence. One of the dilemmas of those who get hurt is to lose self-esteem. It did come to me for a while but it was overshadowed by my strong personality and cuddling of those real friends that I have.
People make choices in their lives, choices that we cannot control. We may have thought that those choices are wrong but what can we about it? We are not the ones who are making decisions. All we can do is to give an advice or influence a person involved in it but without aggravating someone else. Influence to such extent that we give our point about the situation but no matter what the outcome is, we should accept. It may be favorable to us or not but the point is we did our part and we would not have any regrets about it. In situations where there is conflict and disarray, situation which you know is morally wrong, what are you going to do about it? I've been into this situation, I know something was wrong, I pointed out what I believe is right. Even before I've heard this came out from the sermon of a priest, I always adhered to such belief. In cases where we know something is wrong, we must do something to correct it or we became an accomplice to that crime. If you know that you can do something and you did not do anything to correct it, you became an accomplice to the crime. So do what you can do, whatever it takes. And if you are the one who is in that situation and you know that what you are doing is wrong, then expect that worst thing that would happen to you. You can never be happy when you know you are doing something wrong. And if everything goes wrong, hold unto Him, your family, your real friends who would be there to comfort you at your downiest moments. What is important is you accept that you are wrong and correct your mistake. And to those people who know how to accept their mistakes, I am one person who would understand and not judge you for what you did. Everybody may commit a mistake. And that one who commits a mistake must be forgiven and must be given another chance. But to that one who commit that mistake, be ready to lose everything that you treasure. It may be the payment for what you did.
I have learned yesterday that to love someone is to love without gain. What is important is that you gave love, love that is not asking for anything, love which is forgiving, love which is patient, love which is not greedy. Love does not envy. Love is giving. True love would not want to hurt the one being loved. Therefore, love would set her free.
But I would not stop loving. I have always loved in the same manner as my friends showed me. To my friends, I love all of you. Thanks for showing me what real friendship is. I am happy that we value our friendship a lot and know for a fact that we would be there even if the wave is too strong because ours is stronger. That I know for sure.
Above all these pains, there is still room to love. It never diminished but increased. I will love until the end.
